How does the Phone company change your Phone number?

When you tell the Phone company that you want to change your Land-line Phone number, do they do it from their office, or do they have to switch the wires around on the utility pole? How does the Phone company change your Phone number?
It is all done electronically within the phone switch, and quickly (can be done within a minute after you hang up with the customer service person).

In all but the very smallest phone companies, this is going to be handled by an automated system that gets the number change order from the order system computer, connects to the telephone switch and sends the proper set of commands to tell the switch to change the number that is associated with a specific line (yours).

At the same time, the software will set up the switch to divert any calls that come in to the old number to an ';intercept';, which is the announcement that says the number is no longer in service, or if you specify you want something else, the announcement service can tell the caller what the new number is.How does the Phone company change your Phone number?
It's electronic and done from the recent change machine.

It takes longer to write the service order :-)
